The Consequences of Poverty on Children's Health

Updated: May 19, 2019

"Children from poor families or neighborhoods are more likely than other children to have serious health problems." (HealthyChildren.org) By being poor children have more exposure to violence, resulting in injuries and health issues. Poor housing qualities also have an impact and could result in children's development of chronic diseases, such as asthma. The children are faced with constant stress, damaging their brain and their overall physical and mental health. These low-income families can't afford health insurance and aren't properly being taken care of. Everyday I see families rushing into the hospital in hopes of being helped and taken care of, but many of these families get turned away due to not having health insurance, or not having health insurance the hospital accepts. The government needs to make a change, health insurance, that is accepted by every caring facility, should not be an option. It needs to be a necessity in order to improve children's access to medical care and their overall health.
